Press Release: Roswall wins national innovation award for Mersey River Wind
by Dan Roscoe, CEO of Roswall
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CanREA award recognizes a renewable-to-retail model bringing greater electricity choice to Nova Scotia
HALIFAX, NS, October 20, 2026. Roswall Development Inc. has received the Canadian Renewable Energy Association’s Innovative Canadian Clean Power Project of the Year award for Mersey River Wind. The award was presented on October 19 at Electricity Transformation Canada at Toronto’s Enercare Centre.
The recognition highlights a Nova Scotia project that combines new wind generation with a renewable-to-retail model, creating another route to market for renewable electricity and giving customers a choice of provider beyond Nova Scotia Power.
“I proudly accept this award in recognition of the deep collaboration behind this project,” said Dan Roscoe, CEO of Roswall Development and President of Renewall Energy, in his acceptance speech.
Roscoe accepted the award on behalf of the Roswall Development, Renewall Energy and Mersey River Wind team and its partners at Slate Asset Management. Members of the Roswall team and representatives of Slate, a major investor in Roswall and owner of Mersey River Wind, attended the ceremony.
CanREA is the national industry association representing wind energy, solar energy and energy storage. Its awards recognize innovation and achievement across Canada’s clean power sector.
Located near Milton in Queens County, Mersey River Wind will comprise 33 Vestas V150 turbines with a combined capacity of 148.5 megawatts. The project is expected to avoid approximately 220,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Construction is underway, with the first turbine components arriving earlier this month.
The wind farm will sell its electricity to Renewall, Roswall’s licensed retail electricity supplier. Renewall will then sell that power directly to households, businesses, municipalities and institutions under long-term agreements, providing locally generated renewable electricity and price stability.
Changes to Nova Scotia’s Electricity Act in 2013 created a path for independent retailers to purchase locally generated renewable electricity and sell it directly to retail customers. The model introduces competition in electricity supply while continuing to use Nova Scotia Power’s transmission and distribution infrastructure.
For renewable developers, the approach creates a route to customers alongside utility procurement. Long-term customer demand can support investment in new generation, with the potential for projects to advance more regularly rather than waiting for the next procurement round.
“We hope others will follow this model, putting abundant renewable resources and improving technologies to work for our economy, our climate and our communities,” Roscoe said.
In closing his remarks, Roscoe invited CanREA to hold a future Electricity Transformation Canada event in Nova Scotia, giving the industry an opportunity to see the province’s energy transition taking shape.
